Controller Services

A controller is the financial function responsible for ensuring the accuracy, structure, and reliability of the company’s financial system. It builds on bookkeeping by adding oversight, control, and accountability.

What a Controller Does

  • Reviews and validates financial data to ensure accuracy and completeness

  • Oversees and maintains the general ledger and chart of accounts structure

  • Owns and enforces month-end and year-end close processes

  • Establishes and maintains accounting policies and procedures

  • Designs and implements internal controls to prevent errors and inconsistencies

  • Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes

  • Manages intercompany accounting and multi-entity structures (if applicable)

  • Performs financial consolidations across entities

  • Prepares and reviews accurate and consistent financial statements

  • Produces structured management reports for internal decision-making

  • Analyzes financial results and explains variances

  • Identifies issues, discrepancies, and inefficiencies and ensures resolution

  • Maintains compliance with accounting standards, tax requirements, and reporting obligations

  • Coordinates with external CPAs, auditors, lenders, and tax professionals

  • Supports budgeting processes and monitors performance against plan

  • Oversees system integrity (QuickBooks, Yardi, etc.) and financial data flow

A controller ensures that financials are accurate, controlled, and reliable. It does not focus on capital strategy, fundraising, or long-term financial direction.

When a CFO Is Needed

A CFO becomes necessary when the business requires forward-looking financial strategy, planning, and decision support.

This typically occurs when leadership needs guidance on growth, capital allocation, cash flow planning, financing, and long-term financial direction.

At this stage, the focus shifts from managing financials to driving financial strategy.

Our controller services are structured as fixed monthly engagements based on the complexity of your business and the level of support required.
